Village Arts, an inclusive community center in Valley Village, California, that uses performing and visual arts to support the personal development of children in an environment where families come together to make meaningful connections, teamed up with Muralism to transform a worn out building facade into a beautiful billboard for the amazing things that happen inside. Muralism, a nonprofit that is dedicated to employing artists with disabilities and connecting them with the community through art, was able to complete the project thanks to the help of Nickelodeon and ChangeX,
empowering communities throughout the world by bringing together change makers, social innovators and funders to advance and accelerate their impact on the world. Nickelodeon, https://www.nick.com, connected Muralism with ChangeX, https://www.changex.org, in 2022 and with their help, we have completed two murals and are about to start two more. On August 19th at 4pm you are invited to join the Muralism Crew, Village Arts and the entire Valley Village Community in the celebration. There will be music, snacks and fun for all ages. |

Tongva Mural at the North Hollywood Fire Station |
|
|
Approximately 5,000 Tongva people, also known as the Gabrielino Tribe, lived in Los Angeles in as many as 100 villages from San Gabriel to Catalina Island when Europeans first arrived. Today there are 1,700 registered members still living and contributing to this city. Matthew Dominguez, a Chumash / Mexican American artist focused on Indigenous empowerment will lead the Muralism Crew in the painting process. The Muralism Crew will draw a "paint by number" mural on the wall and invite the public to help fill in the colors. This will include Tongva representatives, neighborhood councils, local schools, special needs organizations, senior centers, after school programs and more. The mural features Tina Orduno Calderon, a Culture Bearer of Gabrielino Tongva, and Singer/Song Writer, Jessa Calderon, member of the Tongva Nations of Southern California. "We were here in the beginning and are still here today", proclaims Jessa. Tongva Then and Now
is the title of the mural that will be painted on the east wall of the fire station. On the far left of the wall the viewer will be able to see a Tongva Village. As the landscape progresses to the right you will be able to see modern features like the Griffith Observatory. Join us for a Public Paint Days at 9:30 to 2:30 on Saturday, September 9th, and Sunday, September 17th, at Los Angeles Fire Dept. Station 60, 5320 Tujunga Ave, Los Angeles, CA 91601. It is a ton of fun for the whole family! Please RSVP using the link below:. |
